Origin & Story

Jiao Bei are paired divination blocks used in Chinese temples and domestic ritual. Each block has a rounded face and a flatter face. Cast together, their resting positions are read as a response—most commonly one rounded and one flat face for an affirmative cast, two rounded faces for a smiling or ambiguous cast, and two flat faces for a negative cast.

The practice is deliberately simple, but not casual: one approaches respectfully, forms a single clear question and casts the pair rather than repeating until a preferred answer appears. The natural wood grain and hand-held scale keep the object close to its practical ritual origin.
