Origin & Story

Jiao Bei are paired divination blocks used in Chinese temples and domestic ritual. Each block has a rounded face and a flatter face. Cast together, their resting positions are read as a response—most commonly one rounded and one flat face for an affirmative cast, two rounded faces for a smiling or ambiguous cast, and two flat faces for a negative cast.

The practice is deliberately simple, but not casual: one approaches respectfully, forms a single clear question and casts the pair rather than repeating until a preferred answer appears. The natural wood grain and hand-held scale keep the object close to its practical ritual origin.

Temple Ritual & Blessing

Materials & Dimensions

Both blocks are carved from solid natural heartwood selected from a tree that had been struck by lightning. They are genuine wood—not resin, plastic or an engineered wood composite. Heartwood is the dense inner section of the tree, chosen for its close grain and material integrity. Natural differences in colour, grain direction, growth marks and tonal depth make every matched pair individual; these variations are part of the material rather than defects.
