Hammered Thunderstruck Wood Wushi Plaque

A handmade Wushi plaque whose uninscribed form leaves room for the wearer’s own intention, finished with a tactile hammered surface.

Origin & Story

The Chinese term Wushi (无事) can be read as ‘nothing troubling’ or ‘all is well’. A Wushi plaque carries that idea through absence: no crowded image, no decorative proclamation, only material, proportion and touch.

This edition is handmade from jujube wood identified by Dao Origin as taken from a living tree struck by lightning. The hammered surface catches light across the grain while preserving the compact calm of the traditional plaque form. Each piece requires approximately one to two weeks to make.

Thunderstruck wood is traditionally associated with concentrated yang force, resilience and the power to turn disruption into renewal. The open Wushi surface makes the piece a personal anchor for calm, boundaries and moving through life with fewer unnecessary obstacles.

Temple Ritual & Blessing

Before release, this object was placed on a Daoist temple altar for a period and included in a blessing rite conducted by Daoist priests. For Dao Origin, that rite is part of the object’s provenance: a deliberate preparation that joins material, craft and intention.

Materials & Dimensions

This piece is carved from solid natural heartwood selected from a tree that had been struck by lightning. It is genuine wood—not resin, plastic or an engineered wood composite. Heartwood is the dense inner section of the tree, chosen for its close grain and material integrity. Because colour, grain direction, growth marks and tonal depth occur naturally, no two finished pieces will be identical; these variations are part of the material rather than defects.

Care

Keep dry and protect from impact. Remove before bathing or swimming. Wipe with a soft cloth and allow the wood to develop its natural patina.
