Thunderstruck Wood Gourd Pendant
A compact gourd pendant in thunderstruck jujube wood, hand-refined for daily wear and rooted in one of Daoist art’s most recognisable forms.
Origin & Story
Gourds appear repeatedly in Daoist visual culture as vessels carried by immortals and as containers associated with elixirs, transformed space and the legendary ‘gourd-heaven’. Their naturally rounded form also made them practical vessels long before they became symbolic objects.
This pendant reduces that history to a clean, wearable silhouette. The body is machine carved, then refined by hand so the curves feel soft in the palm and the dark wood grain remains visible rather than over-polished.
Traditional Meaning & Intention
The gourd is traditionally linked with containment, continuity and the gathering of blessing. In popular wordplay it also echoes fulu—good fortune and social standing. Many wearers choose the form as an intention for wellbeing, household harmony and a life that has room to grow.
- Good fortune and continuity
- A contained, protected personal space
- Household harmony
- A graceful daily reminder of Daoist material culture
Temple Ritual & Blessing
Before release, this object was placed on a Daoist temple altar for a period and included in a blessing rite conducted by Daoist priests. For Dao Origin, that rite is part of the object’s provenance: a deliberate preparation that joins material, craft and intention.
Materials & Dimensions
This piece is carved from solid natural heartwood selected from a tree that had been struck by lightning. It is genuine wood—not resin, plastic or an engineered wood composite. Heartwood is the dense inner section of the tree, chosen for its close grain and material integrity. Because colour, grain direction, growth marks and tonal depth occur naturally, no two finished pieces will be identical; these variations are part of the material rather than defects.
- Material: thunderstruck jujube wood

- Approx. weight: 15 g

How to Wear or Use
Wear as a necklace or attach to a bag using a secure fitting. Its rounded form is also pleasant to hold briefly as a tactile focus during a pause or breath practice.
Care
Keep dry, avoid heat and chemicals, and do not leave the cord under constant tension. Wipe the wood gently with a clean cloth.
